      Seven years ago, after graduating from the Baptist seminary in Japan, Gardena-Torrance Southern Baptist Church in Gardena, Calif., called him to be pastor of its Japanese mission. The Japan Baptist Convention asked Southern Baptists not to send missionaries to Okinawa, but to give them this field as their first postwar foreign mission project. Their request was approved, and in the Annual Convention the assembled messengers were set on fire with missionary zeal by the appointment of the Masaji Shirabe family as.

      The year marked the centennial of the modern missionary movement. Although the Foreign Mission Board was only 47 years old, Southern Baptists celebrated the centennial because they considered William Carey, the movement’s leader, to be the father of Baptist mission efforts worldwide. Southern Baptists traditionally set aside the first week of March to pray for and collect offerings for missionaries involved in church planting and compassion ministries across North America.
